Joseph Lee Beverly, Ph.D.

In Memory

Joseph Lee Beverly passed away on March 24th, 2019. Lee was a member of SSIB for many years and a regular attendee of our annual meetings. His training in Animal and Human Nutrition led to a successful research career investigating hypothalamic control of food intake, the hypothalamic control of blood glucose and the impact of nutrients on central nervous system function. Lee joined the Department of Animal Science at University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign in 1996 where he was a valued and productive member of the faculty, remembered as a kind, gentle and hard-working colleague who was devoted to the department and its students. In 2012 Lee moved to UNC-Greensboro as Chair of the Department of Nutrition. Shortly after his move he was diagnosed with ALS, but continued as a committed and effective leader until 2015 when he had to step down as Chair, but remained on faculty until 2018. Many of us remember Lee as a quiet, but generous colleague who was a thoughtful, creative and careful scientist. He will be greatly missed. The members of SSIB send their sympathies to Lee’s wife Marcia and their three children, Robert, Ellen and Emily.

Memorial donations can be made to the ALS Association http://www.alsa.org/.
